FAQ

  • What type of food products can I freeze dry?
Most all food items can be freeze dried. This includes liquids, slurries, sliced, diced, and whole items.
  • How long does it take to freeze dry a food product?
Our FC units are designed to freeze dry most food items in 24-36 hours. Our FC-R units are designed to freeze dry most food items in 16-24 hours. For instance, an FC-R 100 is rated to remove 220 pounds of water from the load of product in 24 hours.
  • Can I overload an FC or FC-R unit?
The simple answer is "NO", each of our FC and FC-R models are specifically designed to remove an engineered volume of "ICE". It is important that our customers understand the general moisture content of their food products. NutriFREEZE makes it easy by naming each of our FC and FC-R models with specific model numbers that directly correlate with the volume of water/ice removed during the production cycle in "Kilograms". Look for the model number designation directly after FC and/or FC-R - 25, 50, 100, 250 & 500 KG's of ice removed.
  • Do I need to pre-freeze my product before loading it into an FC or FC-R unit?
In the FC units you can freeze dry your product directly within the freeze dryer. The FC-R units are provided with a trolley and cassette system, that are intended to go into a separate walk-in freezer. The trays fit on the cassette. Your product will be frozen in the trays. They will be placed on the cassette, which is loaded onto the trolley. Simply roll the trolley up to the front of the freeze dryer, and slide the cassette into the freeze dryer.
  • Are the FC or FC-R units fully programmable?
Our smaller FC units are available as manual or programmable. All of the FC-R freeze dryers are fully programmable and have a 19 inch touch screen computer that controls time, temperature, and vacuum, as well as tracking/graphing these parameters. The technician operating the freeze dryer can easily store drying recipes, and pull them up for freeze drying various products.
  • How do I know when the load is done?
All of our units have temperature probes that can be inserted directly into the product. The temperature reading of each probe is shown on the manual units as an LED read out, or on the programmable units on the computer screen as well as being graphed. The product temperature will assist in determining when the freeze drying cycle is complete.
  • Are FC and FC-R units built in an ISO-9001 approved factory?
Yes, our factory is ISO-9001 approved. Our units are also CE certified.
  • What type of refrigerant is used in the refrigeration system?
We are currently using R-404A, which is a readily available NON-CFC commercial refrigerant.
  • What type of liquid silicone is used in the heat transfer system?
FC and FC-R units use Dow Therm in a completely sealed system.
  • Are NutriFREEZE freeze dryers difficult to maintain?
NO. Both the refrigeration system and the heat transfer system are sealed systems that do not require regular maintenance. We normally use vacuum pumps that contain oil. These pumps need to be monitored between loads, and the oil should be changed if contaminated. The FC-R 50 and 100 both have condensing coils in the back of the product chamber that will need to be defrosted at the end of the drying cycle, and after the product is unloaded. The FC-R 250 and 500 have automatic continuous defrost cycles during the course of the drying cycle. Thus eliminating the need to defrost at the end of the cycle.
  • How much electricity do the NutriFREEZE freeze dryers use?
The FC units can be built to operate on 230 volts, 60 cycle, 3 phase electrical systems. All of our FC-R units are built to operate on 460/480 volts, 60 cycle, 3 phase electrical systems. See our specification sheets on this site for details.
  • If I have an issue with a NutriFREEZE freeze dryer, who will service it?
Our factory-trained technicians will be able to connect to your machine with wifi, and evaluate the situation, and make recommendations. If needed, we will send a technician to your location to solve the issue. Every component used in building our freeze dryers is from a global company with a foot print in the US.
